SafeMeal vs Spokin: finding a restaurant and talking to its kitchen

Spokin is a free iPhone app where people with food allergies and celiac disease review restaurants, hotels, airlines and products. SafeMeal does a different job: it has no reviews and no restaurant directory, and instead shows the kitchen what you cannot eat, in the local language. If you want to pick a place that others with your allergy recommend, or you want a free app with a community, stay with Spokin.

The short answer

Spokin answers the question of where to eat. It reports more than 73,000 reviews across 80 countries, filtered by your allergens, plus recipes, guides and verified brands. It is free. SafeMeal offers none of this.

SafeMeal answers the question of what to say once you are at the table. It builds a restaurant card from your food profile in 143 languages, works offline, and runs on both iOS and Android.

The two come one after the other: Spokin to choose the place, SafeMeal to tell its kitchen what you cannot eat.

What Spokin is

Spokin is a free app for iPhone, first released in 2017 by Spokin, Inc., a Chicago company. Its founder and CEO, Susie Hultquist, is the mother of a daughter with food allergies. The app collects reviews written by people with food allergies and celiac disease: restaurants, bakeries, hotels, airlines and packaged products, filtered by your own allergens. It also offers recipes, guides written by the Spokin team, verified brands and the option to follow other users. Spokin’s app page reports more than 73,000 reviews across 80 countries. Android users are invited to leave an email to be told when an Android app is available.

What SafeMeal is

SafeMeal is an app for iPhone and Android. You build a food profile from 238 foods and 33 presets, say how serious it is, and the app shows restaurant staff a card in the local language with English under each line: 143 languages across 237 countries and territories. It lists the local dishes that often hide each food and works offline. It does not scan menus or barcodes and does not sell physical cards.

What SafeMeal does (and does not do: no reviews, no directory)

SafeMeal will not help you find a restaurant. It has no directory, no reviews, no product or brand information and no community to follow. Those are Spokin’s strengths, including verified brands that answer a 24-question allergen FAQ. If that is what you are looking for, Spokin is the right app.

SafeMeal starts where a review stops. A review tells you how a restaurant treated another guest; it does not tell tonight’s cook what you cannot eat. SafeMeal’s card does that part: your foods, each with an icon and a level (severe allergy, strict, preference), in the language of the country and with English under every line, plus kitchen precautions for severe allergies: clean pan, clean utensils, fresh oil.

Abroad: when reviews run out

Spokin’s app page reports more than 73,000 reviews across 80 countries; its own app roundup gives a higher figure, over 160 countries, and 78 allergens plus celiac. How many reviews exist for a given city depends on where its community has posted, so look up your destination in the app before you rely on it. Spokin’s app is in English, and a translated restaurant card is not listed among its features.

SafeMeal does not depend on anyone having been there before you. The card exists in 143 languages across 237 countries and territories and works offline. “Often hidden in” adds local dishes that commonly contain each of your foods, from 4,537 lines checked dish by dish across 68 countries. Spokin’s App Store listing also mentions a hidden allergen feature; how it works is not described. Neither a review nor a card guarantees a safe meal: confirm with the restaurant staff.

iPhone, Android and privacy

Spokin is an iOS app. Its website asks Android users to leave an email to be told when an Android app is available, and a Spokin app is not listed on Google Play. SafeMeal runs on both iOS and Android, and the card can be shared by a link and QR code that opens in any browser, so a travel companion needs no app to see it.

The two apps treat your information differently because they do different things. Spokin is a community: you follow other users with your allergens and read their reviews of places and products. SafeMeal is a private tool: no ads, sensitive data kept on the device or in your own account (stored in the EU), and a share link you can turn off.

Pricing models (verified on 4 October 2026)

Spokin is listed as free on the App Store, with no in-app purchases listed (seen on 4 October 2026). That is a clear advantage for anyone with an iPhone. SafeMeal follows another model: free trial, then a low yearly price or a one-time lifetime purchase; every language included. Since Spokin costs nothing, there is no need to choose between them on price: keep Spokin for choosing a place, and decide separately whether a translated card is worth paying for on your trips.

Choose Spokin if…

  • You are already at the table and the staff do not speak your language.
  • You use Android.
  • You travel where few reviews exist.
  • You prefer to keep allergy data on your device or your own account, with no social profile.

They fit together: Spokin to choose the place, SafeMeal to tell the kitchen what you cannot eat.
